The Cohiba Black Pequenos are brought to us by Daniel Nuñez, the same man responsible for that other famous obsidian frontmark from General Cigar, the 90-rated and ‘Best of the Best’ Partagas Black. Can the lightning twice? It’s a certainty when you consider Nuñez, also credited with many of the company’s most famous brands, is a modern day Zeus, throwing lightning bolts with alarming regularity. With its double Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper and binder, plus the Dominican Piloto Cubano filler expertly selected to compliment the smoky, dark outer leaves, you might just become a believer in the impossible.
After an initial blast of pepper, the bitter yet tongue-pleasing flavors of roasted coffee bean and dark chocolate slowly make a turn to the dark side, becoming more espresso and cocoa nibs but with a slight nuttiness that keeps the experience from becoming overwhelming. Medium-full and loaded with the kinds of flavors broadleaf fanatics love, think the E.P. Carillo Cardinal Series Maduro or San Lotano Oval Maduro, the 4 3/16 x 36 Cohiba Black Pequenos are definitely worthy of the name. Grab an Irish stout or an aged Bourbon and toast both the foot and the good life. Repeat as necessary.
